Day Skipper - Part 5 - What
a knot is
In the last example we showed our speed as "10 knots" but what does
this mean?
The nautical measure of speed is a knot a nautical mile per hour,
not "a knot per hour".
We measure a nautical mile as one minute of latitude at that latitude
on the chart.
It is approximately 2,000yds and is divided into ten cables of around
200yds each.
Always measure distance off the Latitude scale on the side of the chart.
Never, never, never off the Longitude scale (top or bottom).
