Where we're up to with the campaign

The Red Alert campaign began as a domestic issue, as we talked to MPs to convince them of the merits of our case.

That work paid off when, in March’s Budget, the Government published its report on the issue – and agreed to take the fight to Brussels.

The Government’s report now passes to the European Commission, the 25 officials at the EU that includes, among others, our own Peter Mandelson.

If the Commission agrees that the derogation should be extended, this proposal will then be voted on by the Council of Ministers. This Council consists of one minister from each EU member state – in this case, a minister with responsibility for energy or taxation. The proposal needs to be voted in unanimously to be approved.
