Sail on the world's biggest tall ship

Monster barque visits South Coast this summer

The world's largest tall ship, Sedov, will be visiting several UK ports this year - and places are up for grabs on day sails.

"With four masts towering over 200ft above the sea, and 385ft long, the 86-year-old ship is a unique reminder of an age when sail could still successfully compete with motor ships," says a spokesman for the vessel.

There's a museum on board, plus a souvenir shop, and a bar offering Russian and international snacks and drinks.

Firstly, Sedov will be atSouthend Pierfrom 30 April until 5 May, open each day from 10am to 6pm.

During the weekend 3-4 May, there's a chance to take a five-hour sailing trip on Sedov, when passengers can either help sail the ship, or simply sit back and relax.

The trips cost £60 per adult (reduced rates for children and families) but must be pre-booked, either at Southend's Visitor Information Centre (telephone 01702 215120 or 01702 618747) or by contacting European Maritime Events (telephone 01634 827600).

From 16-20 May, Sedov will be berthed onSpillers Quay at Newcastle, where she will be open for visitors each day from 10am until 6pm. Admission charges as for Southend.

Finally, from 10-13 September, Sedov will be inFalmouthto compete in the tall ships race to Funchal, Madeira. Arrangements for public access at Falmouth are currently being finalised.

Admission is £3 for adults and £1 for accompanying children up to 15 years of age.
