Broom restarts boatbuilding at Brundall yard

Good news follows tough reorganisation of company that led to 70 redundancies

Broom Boats
today announced that boatbuilding at their yard in Brundall, Norfolk is to recommence after appointing two new dealers and securing up to seven new boat orders.

The news seems to bring an end to a very uncertain period for the company, following the decision by Broom’s new owners to place what had been the boatbuilding arm of the company into liquidation last month after several years of heavy losses.

Of the 70 people made redundant following the closure of CJ Broom & Sons, 27 have been reemployed – 21 boatbuilders and 6 moulders, managing director Mark Garner told MBY.

The two new dealers appointed to sell Broom’s line-up – which runs to six boats from 36-53ft – are Norfolk Yacht Agency and Thames Boat Sales.

Already these two dealers have secured £1.5-2.5 million of business, Broom said. Garner also revealed the company had a new backer, entrepreneur Tony Chancellor.

“I am pleased to say we have completed a total business review and reorganisation,” Garner said. “We also have a new dealer network which has provided us with sales… sufficient for us to re-employ some of our past talented boatbuilding craftsmen.

“As a result we have been able to appoint a new and inspired management team, confirm total staff of 74 to both build boats and run marina services as one company, Broom Boats Ltd.”
