Coastguard calls off hunt for cocklers

Illegal workers remain missing, reports may have been false

The fate of 20 Polish cockle pickers remains unknown tonight after the Coastguard called off a search for the workers.

The hunt for the illegal cocklers began this morning after police received reports that up to 20 people and four 4 by 4s were out on Solway Sands and in danger of being trapped by the incoming tide.

But a combined search by the RNLI, Coastguard, and RAF failed to turn up any evidence of the workers.

It is unknown if the reports were false, or if the workers were swept out to sea.
