Coastguard closures are “not a done deal”

On a visit to Milford Haven today the shipping minister Mike Penning said that the closure of its coastguard station was not inevitable

Following the news last week that the shipping minister, Mike Penning, has extended the consultation period over the modernisation of the coastguard, there is fresh hope that not all the coastguard closures are inevitable.

On a visit to Milford Haven today, Penning said that the closure of the station was “not a done deal”. So far 1000 responses to the consultation document have been submitted, leading Penning to extend the cut-off date for the consultation from 24 March to 5 May.

Among the proposals designed to “modernise” the coastguard are plans to cut the current provision of 18 coastguard coordination centres by more than half.
