Harbour bans ‘Captain Calamity’

Newquay Harbour has banned a lone sailor from leaving harbour until he passes a competence test.

Newquay Harbour has banned a lone sailor from leaving harbour until he passes a competence test. The RNLI says it has ‘lost count’ of the number of times it has been called out to rescue Glenn Crawley since he began sailing his catamaran ‘Mischief’ five years ago.

Following another incident last weekend, Harbour Master Derek Aunger has decided enough is enough. “We will stop him taking the boat out,” he said, “A course proving he is competent and can exercise common sense is needed so he can go back to sea. I don’t see any other way to deal with the situation.”

“This is just nanny-state stuff,” argued Mr Crawley, “I want to be left alone. I don’t need the RNLI to come out every time someone thinks I’m in trouble.”
