Hayling Island hurricane causes £100,000 of damage at sailing club

A "mini tornado" hit Hayling Island in Hampshire yesterday morning causing an estimated £100,000 of damage to boats at Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club

A hurricane ripped through a corner of Hampshire yesterday morning, tearing roofs off 100 homes and causing an estimated £100,000 worth of damage at a nearby sailing club.

Hampshire Constabulary said it first received reports of damage by what it described as a “mini tornado” at 7.45am yesterday morning, with tales of broken fences and torn up trees.

Mick Rich, a member of Mengeham Rythe Sailing Club, which was badly damaged in the storm, told Portsmouth News: “The sight this morning was awful. We had two-tonne yachts that were splayed across the yard and dinghies that have just been destroyed.

“I think around £100,000 worth of damage has been caused but people have been really good and have been coming together to help out.’

The council and police are now working to clean up the damage and debris.
