Midlands marine firms boost

Booming leisure boat firms form alliance

The British Marine Federation is launching an alliance to support and encourage the vast number of boating firms in the Midlands.

The Midlands Marine Alliance will be launched tomorrow (Wednesday, 28 February) and has already had interest from more than 200 businesses in the region.

Turnover in the last financial year across the Midlands was £382.1 million, representing 13.8% of the entire industry’s turnover.

Of this £382.1 million, £143.6 million (37%) was Value Added contribution.

Only the South East (36%) and the South West (23%), the traditional homes of the leisure marine industry, make a larger regional contribution to the industry’s turnover.

There are 740 companies working in the industry in the Midlands, employing 4,516 people.

Rob Stevens, Chief Executive, British Marine Federation, said: “The leisure marine industry in the Midlands continues to go from strength-to-strength and remains a successful manufacturing sector and a vital element of the regional economy.

“Businesses operating in the sector across the region pride themselves on the high quality of their products and services, and the Midlands Marine Alliance will play an integral part in guaranteeing these high standards are maintained and the industry continues to prosper.”
