Murder inquiry launched after man dies at Newlyn Harbour

Police have launched a murder investigation after a man died following an incident near Penzance in Cornwall

A man is being held in custody on suspicion of murder following an incident involving a rowing boat yesterday morning at Newlyn Harbour in Cornwall.

Police were called to Newlyn Harbour by the coastguard at around 10am yesterday. On arrival a man was recovered from the water and taken by police helicopter to hospital at Treliske where he was later pronounced dead.

Detective Inspector Costa Nassaris said yesterday, “We were called to an incident this morning in Newlyn where a body was recovered from the water. We can confirm that this man has died and we’re conducting a post mortem today to establish the cause of death. We currently have a man in police custody at Camborne, being held on suspicion of murder.”

Inspector Costa Nassaris did stress that the murder investigation was still in the very early stages and police are in the process of identifying the victim so they can inform the next of kin.
