New Thames guide launched

A new at-a-glance guide for recreational users on the tidal River Thames has been launched by the Port of London Authority

A new at-a-glance guide for recreational users on the tidal River Thames has been launched by the Port of London Authority (PLA). The easy-to-follow two-sided waterproof sheet ‘The River Thames Recreational Users Guide, Teddington to Sea Reach’, replaces the Authority’s existing A5 booklet ‘The Tidal Thames – a guide for users of recreational craft’.

Illustrated information includes practical guidance, marine and leisure activity areas, danger zones, Vessel Traffic Services information and port VHF channels, speed limit areas, marina and yacht club information, useful contact details, a summary of local port rules and regulations and much more. Julian Parkes, harbour master (Safety Management System), said, “The new format has been put together to help people enjoy this fantastic river in safety.”

It is important that those taking to the water familiarise themselves with the wealth of guidance and advice issued in local Notices to Mariners, the PLA’s Tide Tables and Port Information booklet, the Authority’s rules and regulation, and other relevant navigational information. All these documents, including the chartlet and other useful information for recreational users can be found on the PLA website under ‘Navigational Safety’.
