One man died and nine others were rescued after their motorboat capsized off County Cork early yesterday morning. The boat was on its way from Colla Pier near Schull to Coney Island, a privately-owned island less than half a mile off the Cork coast.

The 5m craft capsized in Long Island Sound at around 1am after its engine failed. One man managed to swim ashore to raise the alarm and eight others were swept ashore by the tide several hours later, but the body of the tenth, a Swiss tourist, was later found on the beach.

“It’s a miracle, 99 times out of a hundred you would have had ten casualties today,” said an Irish Coast Guard spokesman, “As far as we could see nobody was wearing a life jacket.”
