Rescue hovercraft introduced by Red Cross

The British Red Cross has taken delivery of a hovercraft to help carry out search and rescue operations

The British Red Cross has taken delivery of a hovercraft to help carry out search and rescue operations around the UK. It was officially launched at a ceremony in Cromarty, and will be operated by the charity’s dedicated Emergency Response Unit.

“The hovercraft will be invaluable in reaching people trapped on mudflats, sand bars, and frozen lochs”, said operations director Ian Rideout. “We’ll also use it in situations where floodwater is clogged with debris, and in other situations which would make boat operations unsafe or impossible.”
