Spinnaker Tower set to open

The troubled Spinnaker Tower on Portsmouth Harbour is set to open tomorrow.

The troubled Spinnaker Tower on Portsmouth Harbour is set to open tomorrow.

The 170m-high landmark was meant to be ready for Millennium Eve, but financial wrangles and mechanical problems caused repeated delays.

Recently there were fears the tower would remain closed over the winter, despite being ready, to ensure the opening coincided with the start of the tourist season.

But after a four-hour meeting in September Portsmouth City Council, which owns the tower, decided the attraction would open as soon as it was ready.

Council leader Councillor Gerald Vernon-Jackson, said: “The people of Portsmouth will get the first look from the tower’s viewing platforms.”
