VHF made clear

Tim Bartlett adds to the RYA's excellent Handbook series

MBY writer Tim Bartlett is the man behind the RYA’s new VHF Handbook.

Launched at the Southampton Boat Show last week as an ideal accompaniment to the RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course, the handbook describes how VHF works in theory and practice, including how to contact coastguards and other boats, and the rules and regulations which govern it. Procedures that must be followed are also clearly explained.

Tim says: “The RYA VHF Handbook approaches the subject by breaking it down into easy to understand chapters. In this way it enables the reader to understand how VHF works, whilst also understanding the practical skills needed today to use the technology whilst out on the water.”

Tim has written for MBY since 1988. He has a background in the Royal Navy and as a professional yacht skipper. As well as being the author of more than a dozen books including the RYA Navigation Handbook, Tim is an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor (Power), Advanced Powerboat Trainer, Diesel Engine Instructor, Radar Trainer, and SRC Instructor Assessor.

Available now, RYA VHF Handbook (G31) costs £11.99 and can be ordered from the RYA website www.rya.org.uk/shop or phone 0845 3450372
