Anyone tempted to buy supposed relics of the Mary Rose through internet auction sites has been warned to tread carefully.

The Receiver of Wreck and the Mary Rose Trust have said such items are “highly unlikely” to have come from the ship.

They spoke out after a recent attempt to sell a cannon ball, allegedly from the Mary Rose, for more than £5,000 on an internet auction site.

The fraud was highlighted by one of the divers who worked on the original excavation of the ship and who knew all such finds were housed in the Mary Rose collection in Portsmouth.

A police investigation showed the cannonball had nothing to do with the Mary Rose.
