The first leg of John Boyle’s Celtic Crusade was smooth sailing, but part two sees him tackle the motorboat equivalent of white water rafting

As if John Boyle’s attempt to cruise the whole west coast of the British mainland in a Sealine 34 wasn’t ambitious enough, he’s opted for a tricky detour.

On the second leg of his Irish Sea adventure, John cruises up the west coast of Wales past St David’s Head and Bardsey Island.

Having coped with a swift current off the coast of Ramsey Sound, spotting a few basking seals along the way, our intrepid skipper is up for a challenge.

He decides to eschew the direct route to Holyhead in favour of a cruise through the treacherous Menai Strait, which he describes as the closest thing to white-water rafting that you can do in a motorboat.

Contradictory advice on whether to avoid or follow the breakers leaves John scratching his head. Will ‘Shark Bay’ come through unscathed? Will he make it to Holyhead in time for a well-earned pint?
