The US Navy has released a video of its latest warship USS Zumwalt, which is currently undergoing sea trials in the Atlantic ocean

If you’re planning a trans-Atlantic passage this Christmas there’s a small, but terrifying possibility that you may stumble across this billion dollar warship.

USS Zumwalt, the US Navy’s latest vessel began sea trials in the Atlantic ocean earlier this week (December 7), as it is prepared to go into commission next year.

The 600ft destroyer class ship is capable of a top speed of 30 knots, thanks to its total power output of 78MW.

And with an estimated total cost of more than $3.5billion (£2.3billion), this is one vessel you wouldn’t want to ding on the way into port.

A statement from the US Navy added: “The multi-mission ship will provide independent forward presence and deterrence, support special operations forces, and operate as an integral part of joint and combined expeditionary forces.”

What they don’t say is whether the designers were inspired by Blohm+Voss superyacht A, but the resemblance is uncanny.

Named after American naval officer Elmo Russell Zumwalt Jr, USS Zumwalt was built in Maine by Bath Iron Works and christened in April 2014.
