VIDEO: Cruise Further, Cruise Safer takes on windy berthing

The latest installment of our practical video series explains how to approach a berth safely when the wind is up

Cruise Further, Cruise Safer, our practical video series sponsored by Pantaenius, continues with the issue of windy berthing.

Jon Mendez talks us through the situation as he returns from a particularly breezy day out at sea on a Fairline Targa 62.

Jon opts to reverse in, as this places his stern to the wind and makes the boat more stable upon approach.

Using the wind to blow the boat into position, our helmsman uses touches of astern to bring himself into position before making his move.

Then throwing the bow into the wind gives him more time to assess the situation and minimise the need to use the bow thrusters, before his crew can use the fenders to ease the boat in, inch by inch.

Jon finishes up by explaining his choice of bowlines and how they will help to keep the boat steady in these conditions.
