Sometimes you simply cannot find any cause for an overheat. It may be just a bit of debris sucked up against the raw water intake, which drifts away once the engine is turned off and the suction is lost. In this case, if the temperatire gauge shows the engine to be cooling and everything checks out OK it is usually safe to carry on.
