Seaward to offer hybrid drive

Seaward is planning a major expansion of its product development and boat building activity thanks to the backing of a new investor

The company, which builds rugged offshore ‘pilot boat’ style cruisers in Cowes, has already revamped its classic 25 and 28 models and has recently launched a new 27 with a 31 to follow.

However, one of the most exciting developments is the introduction of a hybrid drive option that will allow owners to motor for short distances on silent, emissions-free electric power before switching to diesel for faster long range cruising.

Revamps to its existing ‘classic range’ are set to focus on helm ergonomics and layout, improved silencing and reduced vibration, digital switching of electrics on larger boats and new joinery styles with improved aesthetics.

The two new models add integrated bathing platforms and transom doors for the first time. Engines remain Yanmar across the board, but with modern technology such as high pressure common rail fuel systems. The backing for this new development plan comes courtesy of Mark Huntley, an existing Seaward owner and a recently retired businessman based in Guernsey, the original home Seaward boats. As well as providing investment for expansion, Seaward says that Huntley will be contributing his knowledge of business operations and strategy to assist in raising development capital.
