Essex Boatyards Arvor 230

A very modern, modular craft that shouts 21st Century design

Built with the serious fisherman in mind, the Arvour 230’s clean looks wouldn’t be out of place next to the fishing boats and trawlers of Padstow Harbour.

Although measuring 23ft 9in long with a beam of 9ft 1in, the Arvor looks small due to its disinterest in interior volume. The luxury on this boat is that four friends can cast their lines to their hearts’ content from inside the 7ft x 6ft self-draining cockpit without catching another’s line.

Add in some Iroko seats, a live bait storage tank, rod holders and a stainless steel net roller to starboard and you have everything even the most avid fisherman could ever want, plus it’s all included in the base price.

Walk down a step into the helm and you’ll find all communications and navigational instruments set in the deck head, leaving the consol uncluttered. Both the helm and navigator’s seats stow away allowing the skipper to have a bit more space when helming standing up.

With only a small standard sized sink to port and no separate toilet compartment the no frills lower saloon is more likely to be used as stowage than be converted into a useable berth.

Flat out on the water you can make good progress at just over 22 knots. Throw it into a sharp turn and the boat does roll outwards in a safe but slightly ungainly manner but without losing too much speed or cavitating.

The standard spec includes a fishfinder, chartplotter, VHF, a live bait well and electric windlass as well as iroko benches and a neat wheelhouse door as standard.

Verdict

The gutsy Arvor 230 offers strong fishing credentials, underpinned by good, old-fashioned practical boating sense. An intelligent little workboat with a superb spec, it might be small but it does the job beautifully.
