Boat crime up by a fifth

Boat break-ins in 2008 have risen by 20 per cent

Boat break-ins in 2008 have risen by 20 per cent over figures for the previous year. And insurers say that deteriorating economic conditions may send crime rates spiralling even further, a warning reinforced by the theft over the weekend of a motor cruiser from its moorings on the River Tamar.

Anyone with information about the 18ft Shetland Cruiser, which was stolen from Saltash between 9.30am and 2pm on 27 December, is asked to contact Devon & Cornwall Police. Navigators & General warns that the quieter winter period provides opportunities for thieves to steal expensive gear and equipment.

Areas most likely to be targeted include facilities with easy access, little security, poor lighting, and little CCTV coverage.
