Britain’s Steve Curtis looks to be closing on a record sixth title in the Class 1 world powerboat championship, after claiming pole position for the series’ penultimate race today.

Throttleman Curtis, from Southampton, and his Norwegian driver Bjorn Gjelsten are neck and neck on points with rivals Ali Nasser and Ali Al Qama in Victory 7 as the season comes to a dramatic conclusion.

Curtis and Gjelsten’s boat Spirit of Norway completed the 4.71nm qualifying lap in 3mins 2.17secs at an average speed of 107.13mph (172.38kmh). Victory 7 were second in qualifying. The race takes place in Nakheel, Dubai.
