Giant Spitfire sculpture for Southampton?

A giant aircraft sculpture may be erected in waters off Southampton's Town Quay in tribute to the great British warplane

A giant aircraft sculpture may be erected in waters off Southampton’s Town Quay. Consultants suggested moving the 160-tonne model of a Spitfire from its intended location on the quay because of doubts over the quays ability to handle such a load.

The stainless steel sculpture, which will be around 60 metres tall and have a wingspan of 34 metres, has been designed by artist Ken Potts. Alternative waterfront sites on land are still being sought, however, because of the high cost of building suitable underwater foundations.

The Spitfire Tribute Foundation hopes to unveil the Spitfire Tribute sculpture during March 2011 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the first flight of the Spitfire from Southampton.
