HMS Victory wreck found in Channel

HMS Victory has been discovered at the bottom of the English Channel.

HMS Victory has been discovered at the bottom of the English Channel. Not Admiral Lord Nelson’s Victory, but her predecessor, a 100-gun ship of the line which was the world’s most powerful warship.

Victory was only seven years old when she disappeared during a storm in 1744 and was presumed lost with all hands. Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the wreck of the ship nearly 100km from where the ship was historically believed to have been wrecked on a reef near the Channel Islands.

“Finding this shipwreck in deep water far from where history says it was lost has solved one of the greatest shipwreck mysteries in history,” said a spokesman. “It has served to exonerate Admiral Balchin and his officers from the accusation of having let the ship run aground on the Casquets due to faulty navigation”.
