Navy takes delivery of advanced warship

HMS Daring, one of the world's most advanced warships, has been handed over to the Royal Navy.

HMS Daring, one of the world’s most advanced warships, has been handed over to the Royal Navy. She is the first of six Type 45 air-defence destroyers and is able to target an incoming missile the size of a golf ball from 30 miles away.

The 7,300-tonne Type 45 destroyer was built on the Clyde by BAe Systems, and will spend Christmas in Scotland before sailing in January for her new base at Portsmouth. Dauntless, the second vessel in the class, is running trials, and Diamond and Dragon have been launched.

“Daring is a great example of our 21st century Royal Navy”, said her commanding officer Captain Paul Bennett at the handover ceremony. “It is an absolute privilege to be the first captain of a ship in the Type 45 fleet”.
