Vandals damage Oldbury canal locks

Narrowboats hit the bottom as vandals drain the Titford Canal

Vandals who tampered with the lock gates on the Titford Canal in Oldbury caused disruption this weekend when they drained the canal by 15 inches.

Moored narrowboats hit the bottom when the vandals opened the lock gates and threw stones into the mechanism.

There are also fears that fish that were put into the water at a cost of

£2500 have died.

British Waterways will begin repair work on the half a mile stretch this week, pumping water from the bottom level of the canal back up to the top.

Bristnall ward’s councillor Terry Grainger, told the Express & Star, “This is only the second time in three years this has happened and it is just mindless.”
