Victory consolidates overall points lead in Class 1

Dubai team wins European title for second year

Victory Team’s Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir bin Hendi completed a perfect weekend by winning both rounds of the Class 1 Italian Grand Prix at Cernobbio on Lake Como.

The result not only pushes them further ahead in the 2011 world offshore championship, but it also handed them the European Championship title for the second consecutive year.

Victory Team dominated the fleet from the start in the final round to move 50 seconds ahead of the nearest boat, Team Abu Dhabi.

The event was red flagged when Fendi Racing‘s day ended in dramatic fashion after the boat hooked and rolled on the seventh lap. Both drivers escaped unhurt.

For Spirit of Qatar Team it was a weekend of mixed emotions with both boats finishing down the fleet in third and fourth slots.

Sheikh Hassan and Britain’s Steve Curtis described it as “just one of those weekends when nothing went their way.”

With 44 points on offer in the final two rounds in Dubai, Victory Team, the defending world champions, need just 15 to win the grand slam of all four titles in a single season, only previously achieved by Spirit Of Norway‘s Bjorn Rune Gjelsten and Steve Curtis in 2003 and 2006.
