Submersible powerboat a reality

Production versions of a submersible powerboat could go on sale in 2010 after a prototype carried out a year of successful trials. The 31ft Hyper-Sub Submersible is not only capable of a surface speed of 40 knots, but can dive to a depth of 600ft and stay underwater for up to 20 hours.

It is the brainchild of American inventor Reynold Marion and is the first small craft built with the horsepower, seakeeping, and range to allow operation on the high seas. An international security company has already ordered the first four production models.

Florida-based Marion Hyper-Submersible Powerboat Design says the five-seater boat will not only re-define the market for small manned submersibles, it will set an entirely new standard for small craft safety.
