Tough conditions for Formula 1 qualifier in Portugal

Britain's Andy Elliott will line up in 12th place for the main event

Jay Price of the United States suffered a high-speed flip in the opening round of the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship in Portugal.

Price, the 2008 world champion and racer for the Qatar Team, was well placed to secure pole position when the accident happened.

He will remain at the start of the grid provided an inspection of the damage to his Mercury-powered DAC outfit does not force an overnight engine change.

Qatar Team colleague Andy Elliott, the only British driver in the contest, made the first cut for the opening qualifying session but slipped out of the top 10 in session two and will now start from 12th place.

The time trials for the 12th Grand Prix of Portugal were held in cool, damp and overcast conditions on the Arade River on Saturday, with waves and a large swell making qualifying difficult.
