A tragic weekend for divers in Plymouth and Portland

In just one weekend three divers came in to difficultly, including one with a tragic ending

A diver was pulled out of the water near the Breakwater Fort in Plymouth Sound following an alert by dive boat Topgun at 11:25GMT on Saturday.

The 54-year-old man, who has not been named, was found unconscious by Plymouth’s all-weather lifeboat, and later confirmed dead.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of the death.

And on the same day, two divers were taking part in a drift dive near Grove Point in Portland when their dive boat lost sight of them.

Two lifeboats joined the search as well as a helicopter, which found them past Portland Bill.

They were successfully rescued and taken back to land, with neither divers harmed.

Coastguard Nic Lonsdale told the BBC, ‘If we hadn’t spotted them, they could have been in trouble. It is hard to see divers once they get out to sea.”
