Alex Carella confirmed as 2011 Formula 1 champion

Italian star takes title despite crashing out of final round

The Qatar Team’s Alex Carella was crowned World Formula 1 champion at the Grand Prix of Sharjah on Friday.

He took the title despite colliding with his Qatar team-mate Jay Price before the end of the first lap, both escaping injury.

Carella had earlier joined the line-up with a wide points lead in the series. Regardless of any success by others who later completed the event there was no way the Italian could be toppled from his title winning slot.

The pair collided at the third turning marker taking themselves out of the race in dramatic circumstances.

With neither able to continue and both boats destroyed, it meant Carella clinching the title for the first time with Price, the 2008 World Champion, having to wait for the outcome of the re-started final before he could guarantee his second position in the series.

“I had a great start passing Jay and was a bit surprised that he came up on the inside two turns later,” said Alex. “I’m sorry for Jay but I am also elated that I put myself into a position to take the title and now it’s time for the Qatar Team to celebrate a great year for both Jay and me.”
