Private boat owners are being urged to sign up to a campaign to take an active role in protecting the marine environment. KIMO (Kommunenes Internasjonale MiljOrganisasjon – the local authorities international environmental organisation) is asking private boat owners to sign up to its Individual Blue Flag Award Campaign.

Those signing up commit to follow a set of rules, which includes not throwing rubbish into the sea, using land base toilet facilities whenever possible, using environmentally friendly paint, antifouling and other products, and reporting pollution. Anyone wishing to sign up, or wanting further information, should visit www.kimointernational.org.

Meanwhile Kirkcudbright has signed up to KIMO’s Fishing For Litter campaign, making it the 13th Scottish harbour where all fishing boats are now committed to bringing litter recovered at sea back to shore for recycling.
