Three fishermen have been rescued after spending 11 days adrift in a 14ft motorboat. They set off from the Pacific island of Nauru, but their 40hp engine died and the boat was swept away by strong currents.

The boat drifted nearly 1,000 miles and had nearly reached Papua New Guinea before they were spotted and picked up by a Taiwanese fishing vessel. The men had little food and no water to sustain them during their ordeal. “It was so dry that we licked the boat to get water”, said one.
