Coastguard hoaxer jailed

The MCA has welcomed a court's decision to sentence a hoax caller to prison

The MCA has welcomed a court’s decision to sentence a hoax caller to prison. Caernarvon Crown Court jailed Patrick Lane for 15 months after he pleaded guilty to causing a public nuisance by making a false emergency call on 1st August last year.

Two lifeboats, a Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter, and a Coastguard rescue team spent four hours on a fruitless search of the North Wales coast as a result of the call. Jim Paton, Coastguard District Operations Manager, said, “Hoax calls risk people’s lives by tying up SAR resources. We will always pursue prosecution against hoax callers and are grateful to North Wales Police for their assistance in this matter.”
