Paintings of the river thames remembered

An exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the death of the painter Stanley Spencer will be held from April 1-November 1.

Renowned artist Spencer was born and lived in Cookham and he drew most of his inspiration for painting from the River Thames.

The exhibition will include two of his most famous paintings, ‘Swan Upping at Cookham’, and ‘The Bridge’ (pictured), which shows spectators on Cookham Bridge, possibly watching the regatta. Both these paintings are on loan from Tate Britain, along with two other paintings.

In total there will be up to 20 paintings of the Thames on show at the Stanley Spencer Gallery in Cookham.
