Fire broke out aboard the preserved tea clipper Cutty Sark this morning and is threatening to destroy the vessel. Seven fire appliances were called to fight the fire, but the ship was reported to be one hundred per cent ablaze.

Cutty Sark had been undergoing a multi-million pound restoration in her dry dock at Greenwich when the fire broke out. Much of her tween decks and lower hull are confirmed as having been destroyed, although items such as her masts and deck furniture had already been removed.

Cutty Sark is the world’s only surviving square rigged clipper ship, and was built in 1869.
