A South African fisherman had to be rescued by lifeboat after his own boat was towed out to sea by a giant fish. Deon Jooste was fishing from his sea kayak near the harbour pier at Port Alfred when he hooked a fish with attitude.

Determined not to become anybody’s dinner it fought back, and towed the kayak more than three miles out to sea before Mr Jooste was able to cut his 20lb fishing line. The fish escaped, but Mr Jooste found that the wind was too strong to paddle back, so he used a mobile phone to call for help.

The lifeboat Kowie Rescuer came to his aid took him aboard, where Mr Joost was described as being ‘somewhat tired and shaken from his experience’. The fish, meanwhile, was presumably regaling its friends with tales of the fisherman it had caught.
