HMS Victory bound for fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square

Replica of Nelson's flagship to be built inside acrylic bottle, which will be displayed on fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square

A replica of Nelson’s flagship, HMS Victory, will take pride of place on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square later this year.

The model will be inside a 5m by 2.5m acrylic bottle, and will go on display following the completion of Anthony Gormley’s One & Other project and after a statue of Battle of Britain hero Sir Keith Park has been on display for six months.

The model’s creator, artist Yinka Shonibare, said he will use fabrics with a rich cultural tradition in building the ship, reflecting London’s multiculturalism.

Robert Davis from Westminster Council’s said, “This artwork is particularly appropriate for Trafalgar Square and it is fitting that a replica of Nelson’s ship, on which he was fatally wounded, should sit so close to the world famous monument of the admiral.”
