Lifeboat call finds swimmers are practising aerobics

Two fitness enthusiasts 'feel the burn' of shame

Mudeford lifeboat launched a search for two people reported to be in difficulty only to find two swimmers practising water aerobics.

Portland’s Coast Guard helicopter and Southbourne Coastguard Rescue Team were also called out to take part in the costly search off Hengistbury Head on Monday evening.

A member of the public had alerted the emergency services after seeing the swimmers and mistaking their antics as waves for help.

“It’s easy to see how the misunderstanding occurred,” said a Coastguard spokesman.

Both swimmers, described by the spokesman as ‘competent’, swam to shore unaided.
