Link in arson attack on Barrow Sailing Club

Police say an arson attack on a boat club could be linked to another fire earlier that evening

An arson attack that caused over £100,000 damage at Barrow Sailing Club, damaging boats and buildings, could be linked to an earlier fire.

The fire service was called to the scene at 8.30pm on Sunday following reports of a boatshed fire and spent about four hours tackling the blaze.

Two boats and two buildings were destroyed in the fire.

DC Alison Jesson, of Barrow CID who is leading the enquiry, said, “One owner has lost years of work as his irreplaceable boat was left totally destroyed – these victims are devastated and it was only though luck that no-one was injured. This is a senseless act of arson and a full investigation has been launched.”

Cumbria Constabulary says it is looking into whether this fire could be linked to a nearby rubbish fire that Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service attended half an hour earlier.
