Missing fisherman had no lifejacket

The search has been called off for a fisherman who fell overboard near Cemeas Head in Cardigan Bay

The search has been called off for a scallop fisherman who fell overboard off the Welsh coast yesterday.

The 38-year-old Romanian man lost his balance as the 37ft vessel he was on, Maggie Ann, was hauling its dredges six miles northwest of Cemeas Head, near Cardigan Bay.

At the time of the incident conditions were considered calm with good visibility, highlighting the importance of wearing safety gear at all times.

Angie Smith of Milford Haven Coastguard, said, “The man very quickly disappeared in the water, unfortunately he was not wearing a lifejacket, which hindered his chance of survival, coupled with the fact that the water is very cold, which also plays a major factor in survival”.
