Nine new lifeboats ordered

The RNLI has placed an order for a further nine Tamar class all weather lifeboats from Babcock at Devonport

The RNLI has placed an order for a further nine Tamar class all weather lifeboats from Babcock at Devonport. This contract extends the Tamar class build programme to 2013, with a total build of 27 boats, all built at Babcock’s Devonport Royal Dockyard.

A total of 12 Tamar class boats have been delivered to date, and are operational at RNLI lifeboat stations around the country. The 16-metre Tamar class slipway-launched lifeboat has a range of 250 miles, while its twin 1,000bhp diesels give it a top speed of 25 knots so that it can reach casualties at sea more quickly and efficiently.

Among numerous innovative features the boats are equipped with the latest advanced computer technology, as well as having a number of safety features including an advanced ergonomically-designed crew seat and specialist suspension characteristics.
