A 17-year-old A-level student has become the RNLI’s youngest lifeboat crew member. Grace Wadsworth, who became involved with the Lyme Regis lifeboat as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, officially became a member of the Lyme Regis lifeboat crew on Monday following her 17th birthday.

She joins her school colleague Richie Durrant, also aged 17, who became the RNLI’s youngest lifeboat man two weeks ago. Both sixth-formers have been given special permission to leave school whenever the lifeboat is launched, although not if they are in the middle of an exam.

Rob Fossett, Lyme Regis lifeboat operations manager, said, “We are keen to promote the RNLI to young people, and I am delighted we can reward Grace’s enthusiasm by welcoming her aboard.”
