Tamil protester saved after jumping into Thames

Man was one of hundreds of people that marched against the Sri Lankan Government's war against the Tami Tigers rebel group

A man protesting against the war in Sri Lanka was rescued from the Thames this morning after he jumped from Westminster Bridge.

He was rescued by Tower RNLI lifeboat and later transferred to a police boat and taken ashore.

The man, in his 30s, was one of thousands of protesters that staged an all-night demonstration in Bridge Street and Parliament Square against the Sri Lankan Government’s conflict against the Tamil Tigers rebel group.

Four RNLI lifeboats had earlier been on duty after reports that some 900 protesters planned to jump into the Thames en masse.
