UK to join Aquapol

UK water police forces are to join Aquapol, a European partnership for police work on and around water.

UK water police forces will join Aquapol, a European partnership for police work on and around water, on 1st February. Aquapol will step up its activities this year, with at least 25 joint operations and a number of bilateral operations planned ‘in the name of safety and security’.

Operations will target pollution, smuggling (of cigarettes in particular), stolen yachts, safety and criminality. Jan Struijs, the organisation’s new president, said that Aquapol will also urge the EU to introduce a European standard for registration of yachts and outboard engines to help prevent theft and to help retrieve the stolen properties.
