Work begins on Port of Poole Marina

Work is underway on a new marina in Poole Harbour, which is due to open on 1 April 2011

A new £1m marina in Poole Harbour is on schedule for a spring opening.

The project, which is part of a wider £25m plan to transform the port of Poole, will provide berths for 59 boats from 12-15m in length, eight superyachts, 15 RIBs and up to 20 personal watercrafts (PWCs).

John Binder, of Poole Quay Boat Haven, which is behind the project, said the company is working with Walcon Marine to turn what was once the Ro-Ro1 ferry berth into an attractive marina with floating breakwater and pontoons.

Binder said, “You couldn’t find a prettier, better positioned site – it has stunning views of Brownsea Island and is only 200yds from the bustling Poole Quay, with its numerous pubs and restaurants.

“With the 2012 Olympic Games sailing event happening just along the coast in Weymouth and Portland, Poole provides a very attractive alternative.”

Demolition is already underway to clear the way for toilets, showers and parking.
