A new world record for the number of waterskiers towed behind a single boat has been set in Australia.

During the record-breaking event, which has been recognised by the World Records Academy, 114 skiers were successfully towed one nautical mile across Macquarie Harbour near Strahan on the west coast of Tasmania.

The towing vessel was a 35-metre catamaran called Eagle, which has a cruising speed of 30 knots, but the record attempt was made at a rather more sedate pace.

Around 300 people, led by the Horsehead Water Ski Club, were involved in the attempt, and around 6km of rope was used to tow the skiers. The previously held record was for 100 skiers.

Nick Wilson, vice-president of the Horsehead Water Ski Club, said,  “We are just thrilled with what we have achieved. Our phrase at the end of it was ‘mission accomplished’.”
