Italian world Formula I circuit racing champion Guido Cappellini maintained his run of winning success at Stralsund on 4 August with his victory in the German Grand Prix.
Cappellini (Dac/Mercury) has now won five of the six rounds held so far and with a total score of 100 championship points with five rounds remaining it’s difficult to see how he can be toppled from his quest for a seventh world title.
Trailing 54-points behind is his nearest championship rival, Philippe Dessertenne (Dac/Mercury), who finished second in Stralsund. The French driver would have to win the next three races without Cappellini finishing at all to have any chance of turning the tables in his favour; given the Italian’s past record it is highly unlikely.
Despite ex- American world champion, Scott Gillman, collecting pole position by setting the fastest lap in pre-race practice, it was a performance he could not repeat in the Grand Prix. He set the speed after reverting to his original Seebold rig following a disappointing performance with his new UAE-built hull. Unfortunately he was unable to repeat his success in the race itself, retiring in the 48th lap.
Gillman was not the only one to suffer disappointment. The event became a race of attrition with only six of the 19 boats in the line-up taking the finishing flag.
Third slot was filled by Duarte Benavente (Burgess/Mercury) from Portugal, who crossed the line two laps behind the overall winner.
